Loch Ness Contest (for Nov.)
By: Sierra Renstrom

In 1933 Aldie and John Mckay were driving along the shores of Scotland's largest lakes, says Scholastic Scope. They were enjoying the view until Aldie saw something unusual. It looked like a giant creature that seemed to rise out of the water. That's when the whole story all started about the Loch Ness Monster. Many people believe there is some huge fish in the Loch Ness Lake and many others think it is all a crazy story. What do you think? Should people keep on searching for the monster or is it a waste of time and money? To me there could be no such thing that exists, and people shouldn't spend there time and money looking for it.
First off, the only reason why people are still searching is because they believe that somewhere out there, there is a big dragon-like fish that exists. However, is it really worthwhile or possible?  Most likely not. In Why We Believe it says, "We don't need fantastical stories to explain our world; we have the tools of modern science." The story of the Loch Ness Monster is fantasy. There's no proof it could be real.
Next, scientists have proof that the Loch Ness Monster isn't real. So why should Scotland still search? Experts say the water is freezing and so dark only a few plants can survive. What food would the monster eat? Also, there would be evidence of more than one since it must have had parents. We have scientific facts that have proven the myth is false.
Finally, in 2003, British scientists studied Loch Ness Lake with fancy satellites. They covered top to bottom, and they say they didn't find one piece of evidence. A scientist named Ian Florence said, "We have covered everything, and we saw no signs of a living animal," according to Scholastic Scope. If people searched everywhere and saw no signs, what more could you do? Scotland's money and time needs to be spent on more important things.
To wrap it up, the search for the Loch Ness Monster is not worthwhile. People want to believe just for fun and the story is just not true. Next, we have scientific facts to prove he's not real. Lastly, scientists have searched the Loch Ness Lake and have found no sign of any animal living there. As you can see, in my opinion, searching for the Loch Ness Monster is a waste of time.

  1. AMAZING!!! That was really good. Next time maybe you could try adding a rebuttal. That was great though. You convinced me!

  2. You did a great job!!! I agree with Halli, you could have added a rebuttal though. I still think that it is amazing though! I didn't see anything else wrong with it. Keep up the good work!!!

  3. Great writing! I like your clear claim although you could add specific reasons within the claim. Your editors were correct, add a rebuttal (say what the other side thinks) then use facts to disprove it. Outstanding use of evidence and text references. Well done:)
